Query: Shiva Lingam...
Why is it shiva linga sometimes called "Lingam" or
"Phallus"?
Vijay Kumar:
Sanskrit is the base language of most scriptures of
Hinduism. During the times of Mahavira... the 24 Tirthankara of Jainism (preceptor) and Gautama Buddha... the
languages in fore were Prakrit and Pali. Most scriptures of date used Prakrit and Pali. Subsequently Sanskrit
became the base language which continues even today.
In Sanskrit Linga (penis) is termed Lingam. Ending most words with m is very pronounced in Sanskrit
language. That is how pronunciation in Sanskrit language is made. Linga or Lingam... particularly Shiva Lingam
denotes the creative power of Cosmos. Curbing... rather transmuting this cosmic energy into more creative uses is
what mankind was destined for!
Practicing absolute celibacy voluntarily for a minimum period of 12 years makes a Buddha out of an ordinary
mortal. This is how this cosmic power of Shiva lingam manifests itself in mortal world! Shiva Lingam... the power
of lingam... Linga is only symbolic! One needs to manifest the inner meaning of the cosmic world!
Bhagavad Gita... the most sacred Scripture of Hinduism... the doctrine by Lord Krishna is absolutely clear on
the subject. Controlling five senses and mind, practicing absolute celibacy for a minimum period of 12 years,
cutting across Samsara (worldly life) by obliterating Prarabdha karma... one finally gains enlightenment (kaivalya
jnana) and salvation (moksha).
